I think the founding fathers would be proud.

July 1st, 2009

Greetings fellow Bizarros:

I think the founding fathers would be proud. If you have
a tied election result, don’t bother recounting ballots
or retreat to some sort of democratic, legal process to
resolve the problem. Roll for it.

The City Council of a small South Dakota town resolved a
tied 126-126 election as dictated by state law — with a
game of chance.

David Baker won the Spearfish City Council seat formerly
occupied by Councilwoman Shawn Davis during a special
meeting Tuesday night by rolling the highest number with
a die — winning him the right to choose whether to be
the first to pull a marble from a hat — and pulling the
white marble.

“I opted that I would grab the marble,” Baker said. “I
figured I had a 50-50 chance of winning.”

Officials in the town, which boasts a population of less
than 10,000 people, said it has no ordinances for ties or
runoff elections, so the game of chance was played between
the two candidates as called for by state law.

Bizarrely,

Lewis

——– Woman, 90, donates 200th pint of blood ———

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A 90-year-old California woman has
donated her 200th pint of blood — that’s 25 gallons —
since she got her start as a donor in 1954. Margaret
Delfino of Bakersfield, a great-grandmother, said she
briefly stopped donating in 2001 when she had ovarian
cancer, but she starting giving blood again five years
later when her doctors declared her cancer-free, CNN
reported Monday. Delfino said she brings her family to
donate with her and she would like to increase the number
of people in her area who give blood. “To think in Kern
County that there are only 3 percent who give blood when
there are so many who are able to donate,” she said. “It
can mean the difference between life and death for some
people.”

——— 364 Elizabeths gather in namesake town ———-

ELIZABETH, Ill. – Organizers of the Gathering of Elizabeths
in Elizabeth, Ill., say 364 women bearing the name showed
up for this year’s event. The organizers of the event, held
at Apple River Fort, said attendance was down from the 436
registered Elizabeths last year but the influx of women
traveling with their families to attend the event still
means an economic boost for the town, the Dubuque (Iowa)
Telegraph reported. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II was not
in attendance at the gathering, but a lady-in-waiting
sent a letter on Buckingham Palace letterhead thanking
organizers for the invitation. “Her majesty was interested
to learn that you hope to set a world record at this year’s
gathering,” she wrote. Organizer Helen Kilgore said that
while this year’s event fell short of the world record
set by last year’s gathering of Elizabeths, she and other
organizers are hoping to try again next year. “I feel sure
we’ll try again,” Kilgore said.

———– Worm charmer, 10, sets new record ————-

WILLASTON, England – A 10-year-old girl set a world record
by bringing 567 worms up from the ground during Britain’s
World Worm Charming Championships. Sophie Smith of
Willaston, England, won the competition in her village
Saturday by besting the previous world record of 511 worms,
listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, The Daily
Telegraph reported. A number of techniques were employed
to try to coax worms from the ground during the light rain
Saturday. One man strummed rock tunes on his guitar, a
woman tap danced to the theme from “Star Wars” and a man
played the xylophone with bottles. The most common method
was sticking a garden fork into the ground and smacking it
with a stick to create vibrations. Kenneth Catania, a U.S.
neuroscientist specializing in sonic phenomena, said in
research published last year that worm charming is at its
most effective when competitors make sounds that emulate
those of the mole, a natural predator of the worm. “We
carefully compared the frequencies,” Catania said, “and
it’s moles every time. When it rains the worms come out
slowly, but with charming and moles they come out as if
they were running. That’s if worms could run.”

———- Dead man gets 2nd jury duty summons ———–

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina family of a man who
died in 1995 said the deceased has received his second
post-mortem jury duty summons. Robin Lecin said a jury
duty notice for her father, Irving Lecin, arrived Friday
at her Greensboro home, which belonged to the patriarch
before his death, the Greensboro News & Record reported.
Sue Polinsky, another of Lecin’s daughters, said she and
her sister tried to have her father’s name purged from the
jury rolls after he was summoned for duty two weeks after
his death, but the attempt apparently was unsuccessful.
“And they spelled his name wrong,” Polinsky said of the
latest summons. The sisters said they plan to visit the
courthouse in person to make sure officials understand
that their father is dead. Polinsky said she knows how
her father would react to the situation. “My father was
an old New Yorker,” Polinsky said. “He would’ve shook
his head from side to side, he would’ve said something
about his tax money and then he would’ve poured himself
a bourbon. He was a funny guy.”

Lewis, Regarding the vote to allow the women to go topless
in public pools. I would think this is a win win situation.
There are some women that really should keep it covered up
though. On the same token I’ve seen men with big moobs
(man-boobs). I really really wish I hadn’t. -Joy
[I have suggested on many occasions that TZ wear a tankini
when he takes his family to the public pool, but he never
listens.]

Regarding the woman that wrote in the Reader Comments that
she has a 1958 book titled “You WILL Go to the Moon”: Was
the author of that book by any chance named Ralph Kramden?
-Ed
[Your last name isn't Norton, is it?]

well, aren’t i humbled…as soon as i shot off that letter
explaining how one of the facts wasn’t true i went back and
read your stance on how you do not believe most of them to
begin with. oh well, i concede. i never thought id be one
of the ridiculed in the reader comments! -derwin
[There is a first time for everything. And I'm sure your
first time being ridiculed in the reader comments of Bizarre
News wasn't as bad as the ridiculing you took the first time
you had sex.]

This is terrible BUT it’s just so darn funny, the look on
his face at that final moment would be worth a million bucks.
“Man shoots self after doubting gun was loaded – A 20-year-
old man who discovered a handgun in a closet of a Queen
Creek-area home on Monday died after he pointed it at his
head and shot it when he doubted it was loaded, authorities
said.”

Hi Lewis. Cudos on the site. No one seems to remember that
the government has been “borrowing” from the Social Security
pot since the late 40’s and early 50’s, always promising to
“repay” what they took. Believe your government and perish.

Hey Lewis, I realize it’s a little late for this warning,
but you really should have specified to use ALL of ‘Cmen
Beauty Now’ in the search engine. If you only type ‘Cmen’
into it, you get an entirely different section of the web
& may freak out the more sensitive folk of your readership.
(heh) -Dave
[For the sensitive Bizarre News reader please make sure not
to search the word 'Cmen' on the Internet. For the other
79,999 of us, I'll race you to it. Ready, set, go!]
